Derek is a single father of four children with an extensive work history, including management experience, and an undergraduate degree.
“In 2011, I made a mistake that ended my career of almost 5 years and closed the doors to many possibilities, despite my education and credentials,” shared Derek. “With a criminal background, it became very difficult to support my four children by myself. Southeast Ohio has a limited job market and most employers were either unwilling or unable to hire me.”
Derek was referred to Digital Works – Gallipolis, Ohio by an area economic development organization after being unemployed for several months. He had been volunteering at a local computer repair and retail store to continue gaining technical work experience. He graduated the Digital Works program in April 2016 where the customer support training he received, coupled with his recent computer technician experience, helped him secure an immediate full-time, W2, work from home position with Sutherland. In this position, he provides telephone and online technical support for a well-known cable company.
“The Digital Works program has made an amazing impact in my life by opening a door to new career opportunities that are not based on geographical location. They have helped me begin moving up the path to success. The training and connections to employers they provide are a great asset to our community. I cannot thank the great people at the Digital Works program enough.”
